This is a Steyr-Kropatschek M1886 rifle, designed by Alfred von Kropatschek in 1886 and built at the Steyr factory in Austria. Influenced by the German Mauser M71/84, this rifle was adopted by forces of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and the French Navy, where it in turn influenced the Lebel M1886. However it was supplied in the greatest of numbers to the Portuguese Army and Navy. It also served as a second-line weapon, with reserve forces during WW1. This particular example is undeactivated, being of obsolete calibre, ie ammunition is no longer available, so no deactivation is required by law. In good condition, complete with original cleaning rod, with good sound furniture and metalwork and nicely cartouched butt. Featuring under-barrel tubular magazine, state-of-the-art in the 1880's, it was soon to be surpassed by rifles like the Mauser G98 and Lee-Enfield Rifle no1. An unusual 'long' rifle, and heavy! Our Price: £595.00 |
