This is a rather unusual British Pattern 1888 Mk2 bayonet, as fitted to the Lee-Metford and Long Lee rifles used by the British Army in the late 19th century. This bayonet is a volunteer's private purchase item, supplied by W.W. Greener of Birmingham, but made by Sanderson of Sheffield, as marked on the ricassos and tang. In generally good condition, the bright steel blade has a very good edge and point though some staining and light corrosion towards the tip. Good wooden grips, marked what looks like V.M.S. and 103 on one side, good release button. Sound scabbard, though the leather has suffered from what looks like excess heat, and is badly cracked but is still strong and in one piece, with slight movement in the throat. An interesting piece of military history.
