German S1898/05 S n/A 'Butcher sawback' bayonet and scabbard, 1917 dated

This is the infamous 'Butcher sawback' bayonet as used by the pioneering troops of the Germany Army during WW1. Also carried by NCOs as a symbol of rank, the object of the sawback teeth was for clearance of light branches and brush, not for the inflicting of more horrific injury as wartime propaganda had made out. Full name is  S1898/05 S n/A, S for Seitengewehr- meaning side-arm, 1898 being the year of introduction and 1905 the year of modification to that current form. S stands for the german word for sawback, and n/A stands for 'neuer Art', meaning 'new type' or 2nd type, due to reduced muzzle ears and flashguard above the grips. Production of this n/A bayonet ran from 1915 to 1917 only. This particular example is in very good condition, with a period repair to the grips, with a very good scabbard, a few minor dents and some light corrosion.  Very good blade with just light staining, no sharpening, good point and sharp sawback, marked Waffenfabrik Mauser AG, Oberndorf a N on the ricasso, and W17 on the spine with Imperial inspection marks to spine and pommel. Very good wooden grips apart from a replaced screw, and working release button. Fitted into a sound genuine leather frog, one rivet missing and some minor damage. A rare and desirable WW1 bayonet made by Mauser.
