This is a dress bayonet or 'walking-out' sidearm worn by NCO's and enlisted men in the German armed forces during WW1 based on the KS98 'short' service bayonet, though without the sawback. This is the short version, so worn by an NCO, with approx. 200mm blade with no maker's mark on the ricasso, which draws very nicely from the scabbard. Good edge and point, with some loss of the chromed finish on the blade. Very good undamaged rivetted grips, pleasant patina and some minor pitting to the steel 'bird-beak' or 'eagle head' pommel and quillon cross guard. Good sound undented scabbard, signs of pitting under the black painted finish. So many seem to have been shut in the car door! but not this one, a sound example of this unusual dress bayonet.
