German Ersatz M88/98 bayonet and scabbard , matching serial numbers
This is an early WW1 'Ersatz' or 'substitute' bayonet, crudely fabricated for rapid production, while official suppliers geared up to meet wartime demand, issued to infantry for fitment to their Gew 88 and 98 rifles and carbines. With a 313mm blade and overall length of 440mm, these were robust bayonets. This particular example has a very good blade, with excellent edge and point, fraktur marked on one ricasso and numbered 634 on the other. Fitted into a very good scabbard, also numbered 634, with only minor dents on one side, and painted black in the same manner as the bayonet.
