French Gras M1874 bayonet and scabbard 1879 dated, WW2 display piece
French Gras M1874 bayonet and scabbard 1879 dated, WW2 display piece

French Gras M1874 bayonet and scabbard 1879 dated, WW2 display piece

This is the French T-back or T-section bayonet as fitted to the Gras M1874 rifle, that has been chromed, and the scabbard pierced so that the bayonet can pass through it, forming a display piece as shown. The bayonet will slide out and fit into the scabbard. The history is, that this item was found by a dispatch rider in the Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders, in a building in France after the D-Day invasion, and kept as a souvenir. The blade is in very good straight condition, as is the scabbard (except for the two holes!), with good point and edge. Marked on the spine with the St.Etienne armoury and a date of April 1879, in french of course. Sound wooden grips and sound working release button. Unusual item with interesting history.
