Pre-WW1 rifles
This is one of a 10,000 rifle order made by the South African Republic just before the Boer War of 1899-1901, chambered for a 7 x 57mm cartridge, and shipped over in September 1896, according to the serial number. Built by Deutsche Waffen-und-Munitionsfabriken, Berlin, and marked such on the left side of the receiver, it is also marked O.V.S. for the Orange Free State ( in Dutch ) on the stock just below the receiver ring. Stamped in a number of places with the German military inspection mark, this example is in very good condition for it's age and history. The hardwood stock is complete with just the normal knocks, and the steel retains most of it's original blacking, with matching serial numbers to breech, bolt, stock and magazine floorplate. Complete with original cleaning rod and a period leather sling. A rifle with a huge amount of history in good sound condition. Able to be stripped, cocked and dry-fired. Deactivated in the UK with proof-house certificate.
