| This is the standard infantry rifle of the British Army and the forces of it's Empire during WW1, the Lee-Enfield rifle no1 mark 3, made at the BSA Co. factory. The butt socket is clearly stamped with the Royal Cypher of George V, indicating military issue, the maker BSA Co, date of 1917, and the model SHT.L.E. III*, with the * crossed out. ( A III* that has been converted back to III by the addition of mkIII features). The furniture is in very good original condition, complete and undamaged, except for the usual knocks and armourer's repairs, fitting and matching very nicely, and with brass butt-disc ( marked RM 488, but this cannot be vouched for as 'period'). The rear handguard has been replaced at some time but is still a genuine replacement part. The steelwork is also in very good condition, retaining nearly all of it's original blacked finish, and has matching serial numbers to breech, bolt, barrel (also dated 1917), nosecap and forestock, though very faint. The rearsights have been replaced with the earlier, more desirable and accurate type with windage adjustment, and do not have a matched serial. An original example of this iconic rifle perfect for the reinactor or collector alike. Generally known as the SMLE mk3, this rifle cocks and dry-fires, is fully strippable, has a detachable magazine and comes complete with correct original brass-ended webbing sling, sadly a little frayed/battle worn in the middle! Deactivated in the UK with Certificate to UK and EU specification, with cross-pinned mag housing and relieved magazine.
