This is the Gewehr 88, more commonly known as the Model 1888 Commission rifle, designed by the German Rifle Commission and produced by a number of prominant manufacturers. It was adopted by the German military in 1888 and used up till the first half of WW1 as Germany's answer to the French Lebel Model 1886, which used the new smokeless powder ammunition. Chambered for its own M/88 8mm cartridge, also designed by the German Rifle Commission, later models used the newer 7.92 x 57mm cartridge of the Mauser Gewehr 98. This particular example is in good original condition, with matching serial to breech and barrel, good stock and blacking to the steel. Maker marked Erfurt and dated 1891 on the breech, with a number of Imperial acceptance stamps to breech and trigger guard, also unit marked on the front barrel-band. Comes with often missing dust cover to integral magazine and genuine cleaning-rod. Cocks and dry-fires with a precise action, and can be fully field stripped. Deactivated in the UK with Certificate to full EU specification. Our price: £425.00 All deactivated weapons sold by Jaybe Militaria are deactivated in the United Kingdom and hold a London or Birmingham proof mark and certificate stating that the weapon has been deactivated correctly and is legal within the EU. |
