Deactivated German Commission Gewehr 88 rifle, Erfurt 1891 marked **SOLD**

This is the Gewehr 88, more commonly known as the Model 1888 Commission rifle, designed by the German Rifle Commission and produced by a number of prominant manufacturers. It was adopted by the German military in 1888 and used up till the first half of WW1 as Germany's answer to the French Lebel Model 1886, which used the new smokeless powder ammunition. Chambered for its own M/88 8mm cartridge, also designed by the German Rifle Commission, later models used the newer 7.92 x 57mm cartridge of the Mauser Gewehr 98. This particular example is in very good original condition, with matching serial to breech and barrel, lovely stock and pleasant patina to the steel. Maker marked Erfurt and dated 1891 on the breech, with a number of Imperial acceptance stamps. Cocks and dry-fires with a precise action, and can be fully field stripped. Deactivated in the UK with Certificate to full UK specification.
