Deactivated French Berthier Mle 1892 M16 infantry carbine

This is the french Berthier Mle 1892 M16 infantry carbine, designed by engineer Emile Berthier in the late 1880s, as a response to the French Military's request for a weapon suitable for mounted troops, ie cavalry and artillery, to replace the single shot Gras carbines. The first design, the Mle 1992 had only a 3 round magazine, but in 1916 an extension was added below the stock allowing an increase to five rounds, and this carbine was designated Mle 1892 M16.  A rugged and reliable weapon that was used through WW1, WW2 and right up till the 1960s. This particular example is in good original condition, with a lovely solid hardwood stock showing only the knocks of battle! Nice patina to action and barrel, marked Etablissement Continsouza M16 on the action side, one of the less usual makers, indicating that it is a later 5-round model not a conversion, and with matching serial numbers to breech and stock. Interesting middle-eastern connection, with arabic-style engraving on the stock. A current EU spec deactivation, so full working bolt and trigger but no dry-fire. Deactivated in the UK with Certificate to UK specification.
