Deactivated French Berthier Mle 1892 M16 infantry carbine **SOLD**

This is the french Berthier Mle 1892 M16 infantry carbine, designed by engineer Emile Berthier in the late 1880s, as a response to the French Military's request for a weapon suitable for mounted troops, ie cavalry and artillery, to replace the single shot Gras carbines. The first design, the Mle 1992 had only a 3 round magazine, but was improved in 1916 by adding an extension below the stock which allowed an increase to five rounds, and the modified rifle was designated Mle 1892 M16 but only reached frontline troops by the summer of 1918.  A rugged and reliable weapon that was used through WW2 and right up till the 1960s. This particular example is in excellent original condition, with a lovely undamaged solid hardwood stock and evenly patinered action, manufactured at the St. Etienne Armoury (MAS), and marked Mle 1892 on the breech side, indicating that it is an early 3-round model converted to a 5-round M16, and with matching serial numbers to breech and stock, and able to be cocked, dry-fired and field stripped. Deactivated in the UK with Certificate to UK specification.

Our Price: £395.00
