This is a Pattern 1907 bayonet for use with the Lee-Enfield rifle no1 mk3 or 3* , better known as the SMLE. The stamped details on the ricasso show a date of 10 15 under the Royal Cypher, 1907 for the Pattern, and J.A.C. for James A. Chapman, as the manufacturer. The other side shows more inspection marks, bent test and broad arrow mark. The blade is in excellent, straight condition, with a good even bright steel finish to it's whole length. Good point and unsharpened edge, a super example. Both wooden grips are complete but some light damage as shown on one grip, though the 3 deliberate looking notches along the top of one grip might indicate something rather gory?Good release button and absence of cleaning hole on pommel. The oval frog-stud scabbard is undamaged and unbent, all stitching intact to the leather, inspection marked on throat, and also on the back in the leather with a date of '15 or '16 ( hard to say which) plus a clearer H.G.R.Ltd 15. A lovely piece of history to compliment any WW1 SMLE.
