American Model 1917 bayonet wire- hanger scabbard, 1918 marked instead of 1917 **SOLD**
This is a Remington made Model 1917 bayonet as fitted to the US Model 1917 rifle (often mistakenly called the P17) and the Enfield P14. These bayonets were also re-issued in WW2 to be used with the P14 and M17 rifles that armed the Home Guard units. This particular bayonet is in very good condition, with very good edge and point, and only minor signs of corrosion in places. Mistakenly marked 1918 on the ricasso, Remington stamped some of their Model 1917 bayonets with 1918 as the year changed, when in fact this was the pattern not a date! making these 'wrong' ones very collectable. The other side showing the 'flaming bomb' and eagle's head motifs and US, for US military use, and year 18. Very good grips and nice patina to crossguard and pommel, showing some light corrosion. The scabbard is equally good with original green finish to the leather visible under a blacked finish, faintly marked Jewell 1918 to the rear, and correct wire-hanger attachment for US military use. Nicely blacked throat but light corrosion to chape. An unusual bayonet in untouched original condition.
