American Model 1917 bayonet wire- hanger scabbard, 1918 marked instead of 1917 **SOLD**

This is a Remington made Model 1917 bayonet as fitted to the US Model 1917 rifle (often mistakenly called the P17) and the Enfield P14. These bayonets were also re-issued in WW2 to be used with the P14 and M17 rifles that armed the Home Guard units. This particular bayonet is in good condition, with good edge and point, and only light corrosion in places. Interesting variation to the top edge at the point, known as a 'false edge'. Mistakenly marked 1918 on the ricasso, Remington stamped some of their Model 1917 bayonets with 1918 as the year changed, when in fact this was the pattern not a date! making these 'wrong' ones very collectable. The other side showing the 'flaming bomb' and eagle's head motifs and US, for US military use. Sound grips with minor marks and very light corrosion patina to crossguard and pommel, stamped DP for drilling use. The scabbard is in similar condition with signs of original green finish to the leather, maker marked GF, and correct wire-hanger attachment for US military use. Throat and chape are lightly corroded, but nice and tight and  fully sound. An unusual bayonet in untouched original condition.
