German S1898/05 'Butcher' bayonet and scabbard, 1915 dated **SOLD**

This is the infamous 'Butcher' bayonet as used by the front-line troops of the German Army during WW1. Full designation for this bayonet is S (Seitengewehr meaning side-arm) 1898/05. 1898 being the year of introduction of the basic bayonet and 1905 the year of modification to that current form. This is the less usual 1st type, which had 'high' muzzle ears and no flashguard above the grips. Flashguard and lowered muzzle ears appeared on the  2nd type bayonet. This particular example is in good sound condition, with excellent edge and point, and only minimal marking on the steel and some light corrosion. Light corrosion to crossguard and pommel, and sound wooden grips. Marked R.Stock & Co, Berlin-Marienfelde on one side of the ricasso, and 15 under the imperial crown of Wilhelm on the spine. The scabbard is complete and undamaged with no dents, though pitted all over but completely sound, fractur inspection marked on the lip. A very desirable WW1 bayonet in sound and complete condition.
